After 36 years, forensic experts identified a 1987 cold case homicide victim found near the Wyoming border in Jackson County. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office in a Monday news release identified Jerry A. Mikkelson, 24, of Sioux Falls, S.D., who went missing in 1983, as the man found Oct. 18, 1987, dumped on a forest service road five miles south of the Wyoming border.A family member of Mikkelson filed a missing persons report stating he “willingly” left his home in Sioux Falls on Aug. 8, 1983, sheriff’s office officials said. Investigators believe Mikkelson spent time in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Olathe, Kansas; Wyoming; and possibly Colorado while he was missing. In June, the sheriff’s office and Colorado and Wyoming state investigators exhumed Mikkelson’s remains and collected new DNA samples. They also discovered a titanium rod put in his femur, and Mikkelson’s family confirmed he broke his femur and got the titanium rod six years before...

Broncos roundtable: Who leads Denver in receiving over the second half of the season?

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 16:01:47 GMT

Parker Gabriel, Broncos beat reporter: The bye week is over and Denver’s looking at nine straight games to the finish line. At 3-5, the playoff hopes are slim but have a pulse. The Broncos held at the trade deadline and as such go into the second half of the season with the same group of pass-catchers as the first half. Did you know: The only 100-yard receiving game over the first eight for Denver was Marvin Mims, Jr.’s two catches for 113 against Washington in Week 2? And he’s got two catches for four yards over the past four weeks. Head coach Sean Payton keeps talking about getting him more involved and it keeps not happening. So this week’s question is simple: Who leads the Broncos in receiving yards over the final nine games? The leaderboard right now goes Courtland Sutton (380), Jerry Jeudy (336), Mims (246) and RB Samaje Perine (231). I find myself quite tempted to go way off the board and pick RB Jaleel McLaughlin, another player Payton and company sho...

4 red wines you can fall back on in autumn

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 16:01:47 GMT

They say even a broken clock is right twice a day. So, when it came to a late-season daylight saving time change who knew they would get it exactly right? One day it was warm and summery and the next it was autumnal and raining. Somewhere, somehow someone is high-fiving someone else.I don’t know about you, but warm weather makes the enjoyment of red wine sometimes problematic. There are many restaurants that don’t seem to know the difference between room temperature and proper serving temperature. Or they just don’t care. Nothing makes red wine less enjoyable than it coming to you just under body temperature. But fall fixes a lot of that for us. And after this particularly humid and prolonged summer, I, for one, am really ready for some red wine, whatever the temperature. But when it comes to the switch from white wine to red wine, sometimes it is best to lean into it slowly. For that reason, I have assembled a few “lighter”-styled local-ish red wines that go equally well with swimm...

Cabrillo College board censures trustee over social media posts

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 16:01:47 GMT

WATSONVILLE — Despite a recommendation by an ad hoc panel against censuring Trustee Steve Trujillo over profane posts on his personal Facebook page, the Cabrillo College Governing Board of Trustees at its Monday meeting voted 7-1 to censure Trujillo. The decision stemmed from complaints received over public posts on Trujillo’s Facebook page made between March and July and directed at national political figures, which the complainant found to be inappropriate, “misogynistic” and “racist” against “white European people in history.”The cited posts include derogatory language directed at national political figures such as former President Donald Trump, Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, Arizona Sen. Kyrsten Sinema and Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, as well as female Republican voters.Cabrillo College Trustee Steve Trujillo. French: ‘MAGA Mike Johnson’ and our broken Christian politics

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 16:01:47 GMT

There are two moments from Mike Johnson’s early days as speaker of the House that almost perfectly encapsulate the broken way that so many Republican evangelicals approach politics. The first occurred just after the House elected Johnson. ABC’s Rachel Scott started to ask Johnson about his efforts to overturn the 2020 election. But before she could finish, Johnson’s Republican colleagues started to shout her down. Johnson simply shook his head. “Next question,” he said, as if the query wasn’t worth his time. It was the kind of conduct that led Florida Republican Matt Gaetz to dub the new speaker “MAGA Mike Johnson.”The second moment came in his first extended interview as speaker, when Johnson shared the basis of his political philosophy with Sean Hannity of Fox News: “Someone asked me today in the media, they said, ‘It’s curious, people are curious. What does Mike Johnson think about any issue under the sun?’ I said, ‘Well, go pick up a Bible off your shelf and read it.’ That’s my ...
