CAIRO (AP) — In a story published August 4, 2023, about rights groups calling on the United States and the United Nations to impose further sanctions on those in Sudan responsible for alleged atrocities in the Darfur region, The Associated Press erroneously reported that Human Rights Watch had documented members of the paramilitary known as the Rapid Support Forces abducting 24 women and girls and raping them. Rather, Amnesty International documented this in a 56-page report. SourceFederal agency given deadline to explain why deadly Nevada wild horse roundup should continue

RENO, Nev. (AP) — A judge has asked federal land managers to explain why they should be allowed to continue capturing more than 2,500 wild horses in northeastern Nevada — a roundup opponents say is illegal and has left 31 mustangs dead in 26 days.Wild Horse Education, a nonprofit seeking to protect the horses, has sued the Bureau of Land Management and is seeking a court order to temporarily halt the roundup halfway between Reno and Salt Lake City.Among other things, it says the agency is violating its own safety standards that prohibit roundups in extreme heat and the use of helicopters to assist in the capture of the animals when foals are present.More than 260 foals are among the 2,643 animals that have been rounded up for transport to government holding pens since July 9, the agency said on its website Saturday. Several-hundred more are expected to be gathered before the roundup ends Aug. 22.Democratic U.S. Rep. ST. LOUIS (AP) — Some of the people who were arrested during a 2017 protest over the acquittal of a white police officer in the shooting death of Anthony Lamar Smith have started receiving their share of a $4.9 million settlement the city agreed to this year. The first checks were distributed Friday to some of the 84 people covered by the settlement. Their lawsuit had claimed the protesters’ rights were violated when they were caught in a police “kettle” as officers surrounded and arrested everyone in the area. Three people who filed individual lawsuits also settled for $85,000 each. The city denied wrongdoing as part of the settlement, which promises payouts between $28,000 and more than $150,000. Dekita Roberts told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that she initially thought it might be a scam when she first got the call about the settlement.“It was just a shock and a surprise,” said Roberts, adding that she wants to invest some of the money and try to set some aside for her children.An...Saudi Arabia, Bahrain urge citizens to leave Lebanon after Palestinian refugee camp clashes

MAYFIELD, Ky. (AP) — U.S. Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell received a rousing welcome from the party faithful Saturday at a high-profile home-state political gathering amid renewed scrutiny of his health after the 81-year-old lawmaker froze up midsentence during a recent Capitol Hill news conference. “This is my 28th Fancy Farm, and I want to assure you it’s not my last,” McConnell said at the top of his breakfast speech before the annual picnic that is the traditional jumping off point for the fall campaign season.
