One of the most influential books of the Trump years was “How Democracies Die” by Harvard University government professors Steven Levitsky and Daniel Ziblatt. Published in 2018, it served as a guide to our unfolding ordeal. “Over the past two years, we have watched politicians say and do things that are unprecedented in the United States — but that we recognize as having been the precursors of democratic crisis in other places,” they wrote.Because that volume was prescient about how Donald Trump would try to rule, I was surprised to learn, in Levitsky and Ziblatt’s new book, “Tyranny of the Minority,” that they were shocked by Jan. 6. Though they’ve studied violent insurrections all over the world, they write in this new book, “we never imagined we’d see them here. Nor did we ever imagine that one of America’s two major parties would turn away from democracy in the 21st century.”What astonished them the most, Levitsky told me in an interview last week, “was the speed and the degree ...Opinion: Student debt crisis calls for interest-free loan solution

After more than three years of payment and interest pauses initially brought on by the COVID pandemic and following an intense political battle escalating all the way up to theSupreme Court, anyone with a student loan is now on the hook to start paying interest on these loans with payments resuming on Oct. 1.With the resumption of student loan interest, it is time that we seriously consider interest-free student loans as a viable solution to make education affordable and accessible to everyone. The cost of going to college has more than tripled over the last half a century and with interest rates as high as 7.5% on student loans, the price tag to get a college degree can easily double over the lifetime of a loan after compounding interest. Over time, paying off these loans can saddle an individual’s ability to buy a home, save for a child’s college education, plan for retirement, and other ways to generate wealth. This is especially true for historically marginalized and first-gener...Warriors’ Draymond Green addresses Jordan Poole trade, adding Chris Paul and aiming for six titles: report

Draymond Green isn’t just setting his sights on a fifth NBA championship with the Golden State Warriors. He’s thinking bigger for himself, Steph Curry and Klay Thompson.“I don’t like to necessarily put a number on things,” Green told ESPN in a recent profile. “But I don’t see why we can’t get two more championships. Why not?”Green touched on several topics while back at Michigan State, where he starred for legendary coach Tom Izzo for four years.Golden State’s busy offseason had two major moves: bringing Green back on a four-year, $100 million deal; and trading Jordan Poole for longtime Warriors foe Chris Paul.Green admitted that, on a scale of 1-10, his hatred of Paul was an 11, which Green views as a sign of respect, and he needed time to warm up to the deal. But now?“I look at this as one of the most important years of my career,” Green said. “… It’s not to redeem anything about Draymond. My goal is that we can help...Single-family residence in Fremont sells for $2.2 million

Chris Pena was crossing the street on his bicycle at the intersection of Mission Boulevard and Orchard Avenue when a car sped through a red light and killed him."It's strange to be in the world without him here. He was such a rock for all of us. It's simple to say he made us happy, but he's a really, really good guy and he's missed immediately," said Andrea Flaherty, Pena's sister.Flaherty says her brother was always extremely careful at intersections and taught her to do the same. (BCN) -- Authorities warned the public this week against con artists claiming to be deputies of the San Francisco Sheriff's Office as part of an imposter scam. These scammers often call residents by phone, threatening to arrest victims for either supposed failure to respond to federal warrants or subpoenas, not taking care of citations, or not appearing for jury duty, the Sheriff's Office said in a news release Tuesday. Authorities also said these fake deputies would claim the Sheriff's Office already mailed the victim a letter of documentation and that the victim did not appear for a scheduled court date. In lieu of arrest, scammers will demand $5,000 to $10,500 in payment from the victims through wire or gift card, the Sheriff's Office said. SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea’s Kim Jong Un vowed “full and unconditional support” for Russia’s Vladimir Putin on Wednesday as the two leaders isolated by the West held a summit that the U.S. warns could lead to a deal to supply ammunition for Moscow’s war in Ukraine. The meeting, which lasted over four hours at Russia’s spaceport in the Far East, underscores how their interests are aligning: Putin is believed to be seeking one of the few things impoverished North Korea has in abundance – stockpiles of aging ammunition and rockets for Soviet-era weapons.Such a request would mark a reversal of roles from the 1950-53 Korean War, when Moscow gave weapons to support Pyongyang’s invasion of South Korea, and in the decades of Soviet sponsorship of the North that followed. The decision to meet at the Vostochny Cosmodrome, Russia’s most important launch center on its own soil, suggests Kim is seeking Russian help in developing military reconnaissance satellites, which he has described...Host France turns eye on Uruguay at the Rugby World Cup in their first meeting
