A former Alameda County prosecutor — and one of the loudest critics of his former boss, District Attorney Pamela Price — appeared in court on Monday amid allegations he interfered with the prosecution of a San Leandro police officer.Amilcar “Butch” Ford was arraigned before Alameda County Superior Court Judge James Cramer on a misdemeanor charge of defending after public prosecution as the prosecutor. Ford — who now works for the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office — could be disbarred if convicted.Appearing in a black suit, Ford spoke little during the hearing while flanked by three attorneys. Several of his supporters sat in the gallery — among them multiple former Alameda County prosecutors who resigned after Price took office, including Stacie Pettigrew and Charly Weissenbach. Also on hand to support Ford was Matt Finnegan, an attorney with the local union representing Alameda County prosecutors.Prosecutor Leah Abraham did not...

Elon Musk threatens to sue researchers who documented the rise in hateful tweets

BY DAVID KLEPPER | Associated PressWASHINGTON  — X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, has threatened to sue a group of independent researchers whose research documented an increase in hate speech on the site since it was purchased last year by Elon Musk.An attorney representing the social media site wrote to the Center for Countering Digital Hate on July 20 threatening legal action over the nonprofit’s research into hate speech and content moderation. The letter alleged that CCDH’s research publications seem intended “to harm Twitter’s business by driving advertisers away from the platform with incendiary claims.”Musk is a self-professed free speech absolutist who has welcomed back white supremacists and election deniers to the platform, which he renamed X earlier this month. But the billionaire has at times proven sensitive about critical speech directed at him or his companies. The center is a nonprofit with offices in the U.S. and United Kingdom. It regularly pu...

OAKLAND — Last May, when 53-year-old Elk Grove resident William Lusk was arrested in Florida for allegedly possessing a pound of cocaine and distribution quantities of fentanyl, he allegedly told police that his close friend who had a drug cartel connection had been gunned down in Oakland months earlier.Police in Jacksonville, Fla. didn’t know it at the time, but back on the west coast, authorities were still investigating the homicide of 57-year-old Delondo Bellamy, and Lusk was the prime suspect. They believed that Lusk had used a cellphone app to hide his number and disguise himself as a woman, then lure Bellamy to a location where he could safely gun him down. Now, after a police investigation that spanned four months, prosecutors have charged Lusk with killing Bellamy in the March 29 Oakland shooting. He was booked into Santa Rita Jail in Dublin on July 27 and remains there on a no-bail hold, court records show. The police investigation was based largely on phone reco...

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Broncos wide receiver Tim Patrick was carted off the field Monday with a left leg injury almost a year after he tore his right ACL at training camp. There was no immediate word on the nature or extent of Patrick’s injury, but it appeared to be a serious setback for the 29-year-old who was embarking on a comeback after missing all of last season.Patrick was participating in a 7-on-7 drill with the Broncos in full pads for the first time and his left leg buckled as he pushed off to run a route. He yelled out in pain and threw his helmet as coach Sean Payton, quarterback Russell Wilson and receiver Courtland Sutton were among the first to rush over to him.He was helped onto a cart and taken inside the team’s headquarters as the crowd of some 3,000 fans fell silent.Patrick was the team’s No. 1 receiver going into last season when he tore his right ACL in a noncontact drill on Aug. 2.
