Howie Carr: Massachusetts Democrats to the people — ‘What’s ours is ours and what’s yours is ours’

This is what a one-party state looks like.On Thursday, the Massachusetts House voted 128–26 to gut a law passed by the voters that provided tax relief to the working classes on those rare occasions when the Commonwealth collected too much money.Last year, the taxpayers — not to be confused with Democrats — were refunded $3 billion of their own money under the provisions of the law, known as 62F.The hackerama was outraged that people who worked would get back some of their own money. They were determined to get rid of 62F. It was priority number one once the state Republican party committed mass suicide last year. How many Democrats, you ask, voted to abide by the will of the people and uphold the referendum question that passed easily in 1986 with a 54 percent majority? Two. Exactly two Democrats voted to continue giving taxpayers a break — Reps. Colleen Garry of Dracut and Jeff Turco of Winthrop. When it comes to the subject of working people and their money, the Democrats on Beacon H...ASK IRA: Does Bucks in five sound about right against Heat?

Q: Ira, why can’t the Heat do to Milwaukee what they did in the bubble? They had Giannis Antetokounmpo figured out and we saw Friday that Playoff Jimmy Butler remains a thing. We’re going back to the Finals. – Eddie.A: And there is nothing wrong with believing and with dreaming. So if this bursts your bubble, I apologize in advance. But since the Heat got past the Bucks in 2020 at Disney, they were summarily swept by Milwaukee the following postseason in the first round. Giannis Antetokounmpo has gotten better as a player since then, and the Bucks have gotten better as a team. I agree that Playoff Jimmy still is capable of swinging a game, but I’m not sure that this is a series Jimmy Butler can swing. So take it one step at a time. First show you can win one, preferably before Game 4, then move forward from there. There is a reason one team enters as a No. 1 seed and the other as No. 8. The disparity between the teams has been that significant this season.Q: ...Saturday’s high school results

Beloved Dennis-Yarmouth principal Paul Funk passed away unexpectedly Saturday morning.A Wakefield High grad, Funk went on to play his college baseball at the University of Connecticut. Following there, he served as teacher and assistant football coach at Everett before heading south.Funk has been at Dennis-Yarmouth for more than two decades, serving as football coach and athletic director before assuming his duties as principal. During his time as football coach from 2001-2018, the Dolphins went 125-64-1 and captured a pair of Super Bowl titles.Following the 2018 season, he made the tough decision to give up roles as football coach and athletic director to become principal.“Football has been a big part of my life down here. I took over in 2000 and we only had a JV team at the time,” Funk said at the time. “But (becoming principal) is something that was important for me and my family at this point in my life.”Funk was set to become principal at Duxbury High where he was living with h...NFL Notes: Robert Kraft expects Patriots to make hay in the draft

As optimistic as Robert Kraft sounded at the owner’s meetings last month, the job of repairing the Patriots remains far from complete. To that end, Kraft placed a bullseye squarely on the draft, as in X marks the spot. As in, there’s considerable pressure on Bill Belichick and Matt Groh to deliver with their 2023 selections. It’s debatable whether there’s an “or else” attached, but Kraft clearly sent a message.Belichick and Groh, the team’s head of player personnel, have to put the finishing touches on the roster to ensure it will be good enough to not only get back to the postseason, but also take steps to ensure the Patriots will be in a favorable position for the future. In a nutshell, that was Kraft’s edict.“One of my beliefs … to be good in this league, you’ve got to draft well,” Kraft said. “Given the salary cap, and the value of people you draft, as opposed to hiring them as free agents, that’s where your greatest return comes from.“So, we have a number of picks this...Guregian: If the Celtics get the Rob Williams that showed up in Game 1, they’ll be fine

On the opening montage on the Jumbotron at TD Garden prior to the start of the game, an ultra-serious Marcus Smart appeared on the screen and the Celtics point guard delivered the following message: “There’s only one goal. Banner 18.”There’s a long way to go to achieve that goal, and take care of their “unfinished business” but Game 1 against the Atlanta Hawks is in the books.Impressions? Takeaways?Even with a significant letdown in the second half that caused a few anxious moments, not to mention a spike on the worry meter with this team, the Celtics still checked off all the necessary boxes.Jayson Tatum (25 points) and Jaylen Brown (29 points) provided their usual one-two punch, as Brown shook off any discomfort caused by the five-stitch cut on his shooting hand, which actually opened up at one point and needed attention.Derrick White, meanwhile, gave Trae Young (5-for-18 shooting) fits trying to score, and pump out his usual 26.2 points per game. White (24 points) even outscored ...10 people returning from a funeral die in Kenya bus crash

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — At least 10 people died when the bus they were traveling in left the road and rolled several times in southern Kenya, police said Sunday. The passengers were on their way back to the coastal city of Mombasa after attending a funeral in the Mwatate area, Taita Taveta County, on Saturday evening.Mwatate Police Chief Morris Okul told The Associated Press that the driver of the bus survived and was hospitalized in critical condition.“The survivors told us they were 34 people on board excluding children,” Okul said. Children in Kenya often travel sitting on parents’ laps, even up to the age of 15.The accident happened in a hilly area that is a known accident blackspot.Okul said the bus brakes failed, but the Inspector General of Police, Japhet Koome, said the driver may have been coasting in neutral when he lost control.“There’s a tendency of long distance drivers freewheeling to save on fuel. This is carelessness because in case of an emergency one has no cont...Gunmen attack Indonesian troops deployed to rescue NZ pilot

JAYAPURA, Indonesia (AP) — Separatist gunmen attacked Indonesian army troops who were deployed to rescue a New Zealand pilot taken hostage by the rebels in Indonesia’s restive Papua province, leaving at least six dead and about 30 missing, officials said Sunday. Initial information from army reports said there were about 36 soldiers at a post in the hilly district of Nduga, when attackers from the West Papua Liberation Army, the armed wing of the Free Papua Movement, opened fire on Saturday. At least six died and 21 others fled into the jungle, according to the military reports seen by journalists. A military spokesman confirmed only one dead. Nine soldiers were reportedly being held by the rebels.Papua military spokesperson Col. Emergency crews extinguished a fire at a Georgia chemical plant shortly after 10 p.m. Saturday, allowing officials to lift a shelter-in-place order issued in the afternoon when the fire broke out for the second time in the day.The fire at the Pinova plant in Brunswick, Georgia, began Saturday morning and had been extinguished, but the Glynn County Board of Commissioners said the fire rekindled around 3 p.m.A shelter-in-place order was issued for a half-mile (0.8 kilometers) from the plant at 3:25 p.m. and about an hour later was expanded to a 1-mile (1.6-kilometer) radius because of shifting winds, the board said in updates posed on Facebook.Thick plumes of black smoke rose into the air before the fire was extinguished at the Pinova facility, which makes rosin and polyterpene resin.Brunswick Mayor Cosby Johnson declared a state of emergency and a shelter-in-place order for the whole city of Brunswick at 6 p.m. Saturday, he said.“Because we did not know the extent to which we could c...Saudi prince gives 4% Aramco stake to public investment firm

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Saudi Arabia’s crown prince announced Sunday the transfer of a 4% stake of the oil giant Saudi Aramco to a subsidiary of the kingdom’s sovereign wealth fund, further boosting its coffers as the kingdom tries to expand its economy beyond oil. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s decision, announced by the state-run Saudi Press Agency, sends the stake to the Saudi Arabian Investment Co., known as Sanabil Investments. Sanabil is under the sovereign wealth fund known as the Public Investment Fund. “The transfer will also solidify PIF’s strong financial position and credit rating,” the statement about the deal said. It gave no possible investment targets for either Sanabil or the PIF.Saudi Aramco, formally known as the Saudi Arabian Oil Co., acknowledged the shares going to Sanabil. It said the Saudi government remains the oil firm’s biggest shareholder, with over 90% of its stock. “This is a private transfer between the state and ...Climate envoy Kerry: No rolling back clean energy transition

SAPPORO, Japan (AP) — So much has been invested in clean energy that there can be no rolling back of moves to end carbon emissions, U.S. climate envoy John Kerry said Sunday. Kerry noted that if countries deliver on promises to phase out polluting fossil fuels, the world can limit average global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit), better than the worst case scenarios. “We’re in a very different place than where we were a year ago, let alone two and three years ago,” Kerry said in an interview with The Associated Press. “But we’re not doing everything we said we’d do,” he said, after attending a meeting of energy and environment ministers of the Group of Seven wealthy nations. “A lot of countries need to step up including ours to reduce emissions faster, deploy renewables faster, bring new technologies online faster all of that has to happen.”Kerry said the G-7 talks in northeastern Japan’s Sapporo were “really constructive” in yielding a show o...Latest news
